Sign Posts

Zumar supplies galvanized steel sign posts for traffic signs, street name signs, and parking signs, along with the anchors, caps, and hardware to install them. The line covers the three common metal sign post types: perforated square posts in 7 to 14 gauge, U-channel posts that drive straight into the ground, and round posts for street signs and downtown corridors. For state highway work in California and Washington, Zumar also carries MASH TL-3 approved square post systems.

How to Choose a Sign Post

Zumar's sign posts break into three post types, plus the anchors and sign post hardware that go with them. Which one you need comes down to the sign, where it's going, and whether the install has to break away on impact.

Square Posts

The most adaptable option. Perforated square steel posts have holes on all four sides, so signs mount at any height, and each size telescopes into the next for splices and anchor sleeves.

  • 1-3/4″, 2″, 2-1/4″, and 2-1/2″ perforated, plus 2-1/2″ and 3″ non-perforated
  • 7, 10, 12, and 14 gauge ASTM A653 steel, G90 hot-dip galvanized
  • 7/16″ holes on 1″ centers; 2″ EZ-Out™ posts let you knock out holes only where you need them
  • 10, 12, 20, and 24-foot lengths
  • Mount signs with 5/16″ corner bolts or 3/8″ drive rivets; add Tufnut security nuts where theft is a problem

U-Channel Posts

The fastest install. U-channel posts drive straight into the ground with no anchor or concrete, which suits street signs, temporary signs, and high-volume installs.

  • Heavy-duty 2 lb/ft steel with a tapered end
  • Galvanized or green, rib back or smooth profile; custom colors on request
  • 3/8″ holes on 1″ centers, in 10′ and 12′ lengths
  • Mount signs with cherry mate rivets or two-piece bolts; pull old posts with a JackJaw® post puller

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main types of sign posts?

There are three: perforated square steel, U-channel, and round. Square posts are the most adaptable and pair with anchors and breakaway bases. U-channel posts drive straight into the ground and are the quickest to install. Round posts give street name and parking signs a cleaner look.

What is a breakaway sign post?

A breakaway sign post is built to shear or slip off its base when a vehicle hits it, which reduces crash severity. FHWA policy requires crashworthy hardware within the clear zone on National Highway System routes. Perforated square posts on a slip base or anchor system are a common breakaway setup. Confirm the exact post, anchor, and soil combination against the system’s FHWA eligibility letter or your state DOT’s approved products list.

What does MASH TL-3 approved mean for a sign post?

MASH is AASHTO’s standard for crash testing roadside hardware, and Test Level 3 is run at 62 mph. Zumar carries MASH TL-3 approved SQR-LOC® perforated single post systems for California and Washington. Each uses a 2-1/2″ 10-gauge post on a 3″ 7-gauge anchor, and project-specific certification ships with the order.

How do you install a sign post in the ground?

U-channel posts have a tapered end and drive straight into the soil. Square posts are driven with a drive cap that protects the top of the post: a manual drive cap for hand driving, or a power drive cap and shank on a jackhammer. Many crews drive a square anchor first and set the post into it, so a damaged post comes out without digging.
