When considering installing custom signage, the safest place to start researching is local DOT guidelines and regulations. There are certain regulations that must be adhered to, in addition to local regulations you must follow. If you live in an area which has a housing authority, then check to make sure that signs are allowed to be placed before placing one. Once you determine whether you are allowed to place a “slow children at play sign” then you must consider which type is the best. There are a few things to consider when deciding to install “slow children at play” signs.

These signs should alert drivers to possible children on or in the roadway. They should be bright and reflective. They should catch a motorist’s attention while they are driving. Make sure that your sign is large enough to catch a driving motorist’s attention and remind them to slow down for children that may be on or entering the roadway.

Choose the correct wording for the sign to convey your message in a short simple manner. Long statements take drivers eyes off the road for too long encouraging accidents and diminishing the effect of installing a “slow children at play sign.” Short wording and large reflective letters will catch drivers attention and convey the message instantly without much effort on the drivers part.

Consider when children are the most active. Consider the color of the sign based on this. If children are most active during the day, when the sun is up, then yellow fluorescent signs will convey your message thoroughly. If children are known to be more active even during the darker hours of the day, such as dusk or early morning, then white signs with reflective lettering would be more eye catching.

Do not wait until it is too late to check regulations and install a “slow children at play sign.” Consider your options today to protect your kids and the other kids in the area. The right sign could be just what you need in order to catch the attention of a careless or distracted driver, and divert their attention back to the area they are driving in. Placing these signs in designated spots helps remind drivers to be more aware of their surroundings and drive extra careful, when they otherwise wouldn’t think twice.
